BV is a vaginal condition caused by a disruption to the vaginal microbiome. In a healthy vaginal environment, Lactobacillus bacteria are dominant and help maintain balance. Lactobacillus crispatus is most associated with a stable, healthy vaginal microbiome (Seed; PMC). Other strains studied include L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, and L. gasseri. Strain specificity is critical; the full genus, species, and alphanumeric designation are necessary to match a product to its research.
Probiotics for vaginal health can be taken orally or applied vaginally; both routes have been studied in clinical trials.
